The method

How to read the ranking of the best video games

This ranking is not an editorial pick. It is computed continuously from the 367,979 duels players have settled since the site opened: two games drawn at random, one click, and both scores move at once. No jury deliberates, no press score enters the calculation, and neither do sales figures. What you are reading above is the state of a balance of power between 5,035 video games, as of September 18, 2026.

Position in the list, world rank and trend: three figures not to be confused

The left-hand column gives the position in the list on screen, numbered from 1 and carried on from page to page. It follows your selection: filter on RPGs and the top RPG becomes number 1. The world rank depends on no filter; it lives on each game's entry, next to its duel count and win rate. The badge on the right compares today's position with the one seven days ago: it is the only column that speaks of movement, and the one that tells an established game from a climbing one.

What the ELO score measures, and what it does not

Every duel transfers points from the loser to the winner, and the stake depends on the gap between the two scores: beating a higher-ranked game pays a lot, crushing an outsider pays almost nothing, and beyond a certain gap the transfer is nil. A game therefore does not climb because people vote for it often, it climbs because it wins against stronger opponents.

What the score does not measure: not sales, not budget, not the reception in the press, not stated nostalgia. A player who loves both games on the bill still has to pick one, and it is that choice, repeated 367,979 times, that the ranking aggregates.

Why duels rather than a score out of 10

Absolute scores saturate. On most sites, nearly every game that matters sits between 7 and 9, and what is left of the gap often comes down to a community's mood on a given day. A duel leaves no such way out: it asks a question you cannot answer with "both". Repeated hundreds of thousands of times on ever-changing pairs, it produces an order where averages produce a pack.

It is also what allows a 1994 game and a 2024 game to be compared without correcting anything. They are not scored on the same scale by different audiences: they are set against each other, and the same player decides.

The world ranking mixes every family of games. Here is, genre by genre, the one that leads all the others.

What moved this week

The ranking does not change with an editorial update, it changes with every duel. Over the past seven days, 11,350 votes were counted and the score of 99 games in the top 100 moved.

The most contested match-ups

Some pairs of games come up often in the draw, and players then settle them hundreds of times over. Here are the most played match-ups, and the way they turn out.

The most contested match-ups
Wins Against Duels played Win rate
Stardew Valley Minecraft: Java Edition 245 55%
Half-Life 2 Doom 202 54%
Fallout: New Vegas Fallout 3 190 59%
BioShock Undertale 174 51%
Stardew Valley Undertale 168 54%

The limits of this ranking

A game has to be known to enter the duels: the pool is built on fame, which leaves out excellent but confidential titles. The full catalogue holds 26,914 of them and stays browsable from A to Z.

A recent game starts at 1,500 points like every other, and it needs several hundred duels before its score means anything. The ranking is therefore firmer at the top, where games have faced each other a lot, than in the middle of the list.

Finally, voting needs no account, which would open the door to anyone wanting to push a title. Duels served are signed and expire, the same visitor cannot vote twice on the same bill within 24 hours, reflex votes are left out of the calculation, and the whole ranking stays replayable from the votes table: a campaign can be undone afterwards, it never sets into a score.

FAQ

Questions about the ranking

How is this ranking established?

The ranking comes solely from player votes, in duels between two games. Each vote updates an ELO score, the rating system used in chess: every game starts at 1,500 points and its score moves duel after duel.

How often is the ranking updated?

Continuously: every duel voted immediately adjusts the score of the two games involved. The badge on the right shows how each game's rank moved over the past seven days.

How many games take part in the ranking?

5,035 games, selected for their fame, face off in duels. The full GameForever catalogue covers tens of thousands of titles, across every era and platform.

How can I see the best games by genre, decade or platform?

Use the filters at the top of the page: genre (RPG, FPS, platformer, strategy...), decade and platform (PC, PlayStation, Nintendo, Xbox, SEGA). Filters combine, and the selection is numbered from 1, from the highest ranked down; each game's world rank stays shown on its own entry. The period filter instead ranks on the points gained recently, from 7 days to 12 months (all time by default).

Why can an indie game finish ahead of a blockbuster?

The ELO score measures neither sales nor budget, but the preferences expressed in duels. An indie game that regularly wins its match-ups against higher-ranked titles climbs mechanically, owing nothing to its production budget.

What is the difference between the position in the list and the world rank?

The position is that of the selection on screen, numbered from 1 and carried on from page to page: filter on RPGs and the top RPG becomes number 1. The world rank depends on no filter and is shown on each game's own entry, along with its duel count and win rate.

Why rank by duels rather than by a score out of 10?

Absolute scores saturate: nearly every game that matters ends up between 7 and 9, and what is left of the gap often says more about a site's audience than about the games. A duel asks a question you cannot answer with "both", and it lets a 1994 game and a 2024 game be compared without correcting anything: they are not scored on two scales, they are set against each other.
