The principle
How does it work?
GameForever does not rate games: it makes them face off. Every duel won or lost adjusts an ELO score inherited from chess, and millions of votes draw the world ranking of the best video games of all time.
Vote
Two games face off on screen. Click your favourite: the vote is recorded instantly and the next duel appears. No account, no form, the loop lasts two seconds.
ELO decides
Each duel transfers points from the loser to the winner, based on the gap between their scores. Beating a giant pays big, crushing an underdog almost nothing: a score cannot be inflated artificially.
The ranking lives
No jury, no secret weighting: the world ranking reflects the duels of the whole community and moves continuously. The 7-day trends show who is rising and who is falling.
The engine
ELO in detail
Every game starts at 1,500 points. On each duel, the system first works out how likely each game is to win from the score gap, then transfers up to 32 points depending on whether the result confirms or upsets that forecast. Here is an example with two games from the current ranking:
Portal 2 ELO 1,993
Stardew Valley ELO 1,925
With a 68 point gap, Portal 2 is expected to win 60% of the time.
-
Expected result
Portal 2 wins
+13 for Portal 2
−13 for Stardew Valley
-
The upset
Stardew Valley wins
+19 for Stardew Valley
−19 for Portal 2
The more surprising the result, the more it weighs: that is what lets underdogs climb fast when the community backs them, and what makes cheating pointless.
The methodology
One ranking, clear rules
5,000
games in duels
The duel pool gathers the most emblematic games, selected for their fame. The full catalogue covers tens of thousands of titles, browsable in the ranking and the search.
1
world ranking
Votes from French-speaking, English-speaking and Spanish-speaking players feed the same ELO score. No regional weighting, no jury: a vote is a vote, anywhere in the world.
24/7
continuous updates
The ranking is recalculated on every vote, with no freeze period. The trends shown over 7 days let you follow rank gains and drops.
Integrity
Anti-cheat, without friction
The protections are invisible to honest players: no captcha, no mandatory account. Four mechanisms work behind the scenes.
Signed duels
Every match-up served is digitally signed and expires after a few minutes. There is no way to vote on a duel that was not served, or to replay a vote.
One vote per match-up
The same visitor counts only once per pair of games over 24 hours. Voting again on the same match-up has no effect on the scores.
Capped rate
The number of votes per minute and per day is limited for each visitor. Beyond that, votes are silently ignored, without blocking browsing.
Reflex-vote filter
A vote submitted less than 0.5 seconds after the duel appears is recorded but excluded from the ELO calculation: random clicking does not weigh on the ranking.
And by design, the ELO absorbs whatever slips through: beating a low-ranked game over and over earns almost nothing, and every duel is capped at 32 points.
FAQ
Going further
Why an ELO score rather than a score out of 10?
A score out of 10 depends on everyone's own scale: a strict 7 equals a generous 9. The duel forces a clear choice between two games and the ELO score aggregates those choices into a value comparable for everyone. It is the method used in chess since the 1960s.
Are my votes anonymous?
Yes. No account is required, no personal data is asked for and the IP address is never stored in clear text: it is hashed with an application key before any processing.
Can a game lose points without having been played in a duel?
No. A game's ELO score only moves at the end of a duel involving it. A game that does not appear in duels keeps exactly its score.
Why are some games not in the duel pool?
The pool is deliberately capped at 5,000 titles, picked for their fame and with a cover available: beyond that, most match-ups would pit two games no voter has ever heard of, and the ranking would lose its meaning. A game outside the pool keeps its entry, its place in the search and its discussion thread, but no world rank: its 1,500 points are never at stake, so the score neither rises nor falls. The pool is recalculated with every catalogue update, so a game can join it later.
How does a new game enter the duel pool?
The GameForever catalogue covers tens of thousands of titles. 5,000 games, selected for their fame and with a cover available, take part in duels. Every newcomer starts at 1,500 points, the base score.
What happens in case of suspicious votes?
The protections work silently: signed duels with a limited lifetime, deduplication per visitor over 24 hours, a cap on votes per minute and exclusion from the ELO calculation of reflex votes submitted in under 0.5 seconds. No captcha, no friction for honest players.
