About Red Dead Redemption

A modern-day Western epic, Red Dead Redemption takes John Marston, a relic from the fast-closing time of the gunslinger, through an open world filled with wildlife, mini-games, and shootouts. Marston sets out to hunt down his old gang mates for the government, who have taken away his family. Along his journey, he meets many characters emblematic of the Wild West, heroism, and the new civilization.

Honestly the pacing has real issues early on, ngl, but the last act still hits harder than most games manage in their entire runtime.

Yeah the last act thing is real, I remember thinking the same, and honestly it's rare that a game saves its best material for last instead of frontloading everything.

Compared to Mass Effect 2, the pacing philosophy is almost opposite, one drip feeds you plot every mission, the other makes you ride in silence and think. Both work, but only one gets called boring for it.

Marston alone justifies the rank. Best written protagonist of that era, easily.

Bref, this game gets praised for atmosphere but the mission design is stiff and dated, and that alone should keep it out of a top tier.

    Peltier8
