I keep coming back to how GOOD the period atmosphere feels, the cars, the radio, all of it, even if the open world itself barely gives you anything to do…

Mafia II is a third-person action-adventure game set in the fictional American city of Empire Bay between 1945 and 1951. Players control Vito Scaletta through a story-driven campaign involving organized crime, navigating an open world on foot or by vehicle. Gameplay combines shooting, driving, and limited melee combat, with a wanted system that escalates law enforcement response based on criminal activity. The game features era-appropriate vehicles, licensed period music across multiple radio stations, and a cover-based combat system.

I keep coming back to how GOOD the period atmosphere feels, the cars, the radio, all of it, even if the open world itself barely gives you anything to do outside missions, which is kind of a shame honestly.

La atmosphere carries a lot here, sure, but is that enough when the map itself barely has content?

Man, I remember getting this right when it came out and just cruising around listening to the radio for hours.

Say what you want about the empty world, I still think about Vito's story more than most GTA plots combined.

Story lands, or mostly does, but the shooting stays stiff the whole way through.

Why does everyone judge this against GTA when the whole point was never to copy that formula in the first place?
