I picked this up because everyone kept calling it a masterpiece, and I bounced off hard around the third demon. The atmosphere is great but the combat felt clunkier than people admit, like it's carried by mystique more than actual design.

Did you push through after the third demon or just walk away for good? I ask because I almost quit there too, then something clicked and the rest felt completely different.

What sets it apart for me is how the level design ties directly into the tension. Every area funnels you toward risk in a way that feels intentional, not just difficulty for its own sake, and that's why later games in the genre still get compared to it.

Level design carrying the tension makes sense, though I'd say the ranking rewards vocal fanbases more than influence itself, and that's just how these duels shake out

It doesn't get the credit it deserves for basically setting the template everyone copies now. The multiplayer integration was clunky by today's standards, sure, but the world design still holds up better than most recent attempts.

Or, well, I switch sides depending on which one I lost to more recently.

Yeah same, I've voted for it in basically every duel it's had since I found this site, template or not it earned that reputation.

Next to Hollow Knight it feels heavier, slower, more punishing in a different way.

Only played it a few hours, but that heaviness stuck with me.

Movement feels stiff by modern standards but the weight of every swing sells the danger. Lock-on has issues in tight spaces, and animations commit hard with no canceling, which forces a patience most action games don't demand anymore.

played it years back, barely scraped past the second demon honestly, how far did you get before it clicked for you

The fog area got me, I remember pausing mid-session just to breathe, my roommate thought I'd rage quit.
