the management loop is solid but it stops evolving after a certain point and the late game just repeats the same problems

What sells it for me is the terrain use, real terrain use, not decoration, every hedge and wall actually matters and changes how you fight.
The dungeon design in the back half still holds up better than people give it credit for, especially the later ones.
