404th with 73% win rate is a weird combo, feels like it wins duels but loses visibility against bigger names.

    NovaWolf1994

Weird combo maybe but I'd guess the win rate comes from easier matchups, not from actually outclassing something like Melee

    wrodarte

  2. sporer_elva

Still defending it here (not that anyone asked), out of pure habit at this point.

    IronKid2

  3. heller_brain

Compared to SoulCalibur II the depth just isn't there, but the character roster still feels more memorable to me somehow, weirdly enough.

    Mckenna_66

You'll say depth matters more, but that memorable roster is exactly why people keep coming back to it

  4. ursula23

People will say this is just nostalgia talking, but I think it's overrated now

  5. Cosmo_Runolfsdottir

People act like this needs defending? It's a legend, the fatalities alone earn it the spot!!

    Glitch_McLaughlin

The fatalities earned their PLACE in history, sure, but a modern session shows the neutral game just hasn't kept up.

  6. Cortez_1998

The animation still holds up frame by frame, and the input reads better than people give it credit for, honestly try it side by side with something modern and tell me the spacing feels off.

  7. edwardo_schulist

Why would this not be top tier for a fighting game its age?

    CritAce80

Age alone isn't a free pass, plenty of fighters that old play way better now than this one does.

    Coop_Kuvalis

Fair point, still overrated a bit.

    NeonRider

  8. BossNinja1986

I feel like it's ranked a bit high for what it actually offers now.

  9. claire72

Still love firing this up, the personality of every character just jumps out even now!!

    stephen_schumm

The personality argument works for the cast but the ranking should reflect how it plays now, not how memorable the roster is.

    FrameKid

    IronHunter82

Tried it again last month after finishing Melee with my brother, went back to this and it just felt slow.

  10. EmileWarden

Simple inputs, huge personality. Still one of the most quotable rosters in fighting games, and that counts for something here.

  11. LuckyHunter

Next to Tekken 3 the systems feel ancient, but next to most fighters from its own era it was already ahead of the curve.

  12. Tromp53

It absolutely deserves its place. People just forget how influential it was.

    CoopKnight4

It's influence, not just nostalgia, thats why people still bring it up in every duel.

  13. NeonPilot26

Still fun in short bursts. Not sure it deserves a top spot though.

    TurboByte

    QuestRex5

Short bursts against Smash Melee specifically though? That matchup feels almost unfair for different reasons.

    Zita_13

    Replying to TurboByte

Newer games grab the visibility, sure, but that win rate says something the rankings don't show.

    xsimonis

Short bursts is generous, honestly, the moveset runs out of ideas after a handful of matches for me.

    Tristan_42

    CritMaster95

I was maybe nine, at a friend's older brother's place, and even then the combos felt stiff compared to what he also had running.

    BossOwl1995

yeah short bursts is exactly right, i can play three matches and put it down happy (unlike some fighters i sink hours into) doesnt need a top spot to be worth it

    Edgardo_93

Rigid inputs and all, the read speed on block animations still feels honest, none of that modern buffer forgiveness...

    Arnaude_40

    CoopRider

The fatalities and atmosphere carry it further than people admit, especially in short matches where the rigidity matters less.

    GhostPhoenix
