I was maybe thirteen, standing behind two older guys who kept winning and refusing to give up the stick, so I just watched the whole afternoon and memorized every guest character's intro without ever touching the controls myself.

    Faivre4

I remeber lining up quarters on the cabinet edge like everyone did back then, waiting my turn while older kids called the next matchup out loud like it mattered more than school did.

    NovaRider

Same lining-up-quarters memory here honestly, except our older kids called out combos instead of matchups, wich made it feel like a whole secret language none of us new players understood yet.

For a game this old to still sit at 1774 with 98 duels feels off, the roster carried it more than the mechanics did.

    FramePlayer

Fair point on the roster, but stack it against Mortal Kombat II or Street Fighter II and the whole ranking conversation shifts, it's never just one title carrying a spot at 281.

    GlitchBard

I get called out for saying the roster carried it, fair, but I still pick guests over the core cast every time.

    VinylRex

My cousin swore by the guest pick too, every single arcade run, no exceptions.

    SilentHunter2

Duels count more than nostalgia for me here, and 78% across 98 fights against names like that says the roster carrys weight beyond guest gimmicks.

Anyone else remember the line for this cabinet (longer than the one for the snack counter)?

    CoopRider14

My roommate and I used to pick the guest character just to see people's reactions, it became this weird ritual before anything else. The actual fighting system holds up fine but we spent more time laughing at reactions than analyzing matchups.

    Moral2003

  6. Corwin18

We used to rotate four controllers and just call NEXT after every loss, that alone earns it a spot this high in my book.

    Pixel_Espinosa

  7. Matteo_2007

The weapon variety looks impressive on paper but half the cast shares hitboxes and frame data that barely differ, and the guard system punishes anyone who doesn't already know the matchups going in.

    lubowitz_brock

Fair on the hitboxes, honestly, but as a kid none of us noticed, we just wanted our turn on the stick.

    BossMaster2010

Artistic achievement, sure, but is picking a guest character really the same as balancing a roster?

  9. Éric_25

    Iron_Shields

Was the guest character on your cabinet the one everyone lined up for, or did people mostly ignore it and stick to the regulars?

    IronNinja

Never touched the stick that day, just stood there memorizing intros, and somehow that stuck with me longer than most games I actually finished.
