Why does this keep landing on best-of-all-time lists when it loses more duels than it wins? You'll tell me the ring menu was revolutionary, sure, but does that alone justify sitting anywhere near these modern RPGs? Genuinely asking.

  2. IronPlayer

i get why people love it but the combat really hasn't aged the way people pretend it has, especially the lag when multiple things happen on screen at once, it just wasn't built for how demanding modern rpgs make us as players

I still smile every time I hear that opening theme! The combat feels a bit stiff by today's standards but honestly who cares, it's charming as hell.

    TurboSniper80

I used to play this at my cousin's house every summer, three of us crammed on one couch fighting over whose turn it was next (we had a whole rotation system, very serious business). Seeing it ranked this low after all that just feels off somehow.

    CritPlayer7

Losing six out of ten duels against modern open-world giants isn't bad luck, it's a pattern. The gap in scope is just too wide to ignore now.

People keep calling this a masterpiece and I just don't buy it anymore. The menu system everyone praises slows down every single fight. It got lucky with timing, not quality.

    Coop_Ferrer

  6. Tanner_28

Overrated nostalgia bait, honestly (there, I said it).

    QuestDragon2008

Overrated maybe, but I remember trading turns with my brother every rainy afternoon that summer, so it earned its spot with me.

  7. VinylRex

I remember getting this as a rental and begging my parents for one more weekend with it. That ring menu system felt like magic to a kid who'd never seen anything like it before.

  8. GerhardByte

compared to skyrim its basically a snack not a meal, but sometimes you want the snack

    Vinyl_Alfonso

  9. VinylMaster

Borderlands 2 alone has more content than this had in its entire lifespan.

    NovaAce2

Right?? Borderlands has the content but this one has the SOUL, ask anyone who grew up with it!!

    Neon_Picard

    Pagac35

But the win rate isn't random, it keeps drawing the same modern giants and losing, that pattern is what the ranking shows.

    Edgardo_93

The lag you're describing shows up mostly with three characters active at once, it's a real limitation but it rarely breaks a solo run.

  11. LootAce

    Mckenna_66

Why compare it to Skyrim's scale at all though? It wasn't built to be a mastodon, it was built to be finished in a weekend with friends.

  15. BossPilot2

    IronHunter82

not gonna lie, borderlands 2 kept me busy for way longer, but this one's the game I'd hand to a kid first

    RachelleLegend

Soul is a strange word for something I mostly remember as clunky menus and getting stuck on my brother's turn.
