Another duel, another round of the same arguments. It's fine, I guess. Good in parts, tiring in others.

    GhostLegend98

  2. MertieHunter

Replayed it recently, the tech holds up less than the writing does.

    FrameKid2

  3. NovaMaster2

People keep saying it's just a walking simulator with dialogue trees and I'm tired of hearing it. The detective work carries entire cases on facial reads and evidence gathering, and that's a real mechanic, not filler. It earns its spot in this ranking fair and square.

    ComboLegend

    AbdullahKnight

Fair enough on the mechanic, but does earning its spot mean it deserves to win against literally everything, every time, no exceptions?

  4. RogueNinja97

Portal 2 has puzzle design that ages perfectly (still tight today). This has interrogations that age just as well, different genres though.

  5. QuestLegend2

So this is going to sound weird but I played this right after a breakup and something about driving around 1947 LA doing interrogations was weirdly therapeutic, like I had a job to do and cases to solve instead of thinking about my own stuff, my roommate thought it was hilarious that I got so into questioning virtual witnesses, anyway good times.

    QuestRex5

Did questioning virtual witnesses actually help more than just distracting you, or was it just noise to drown out the real stuff?

  6. Wolff54

The interrogation mechanic is genuinely unique, nothing else really does what it does with reading faces and choosing your approach. The driving and shooting sections feel bolted on though, like a different team made them, and they drag down what is otherwise a really interesting detective experience.

    LuckyByte9

    NovaOwl

Yeah I get the appeal but honestly the driving sections killed my momentum every single time, made the pacing feel off overall.

Sits at 1707 ELO with a 63% win rate, which is a solid mid-tier record for a nine year old port.

    Nova_Pagan

    SilentMaster

A mid-tier ELO with that win rate after nine years says the core mechanic still convinces people, that's not nothing.

  8. SammieDragon

I get why people put StarCraft and Portal 2 on pedestals, but the facial animation work in this game did something neither of those even attempted, and I still think about interrogation scenes years later.

    Geraldine_2001

Facial animation is impressive, sure, but compare the actual open world to what other games on this list offer and it's thin.

    qstanton

You'll say the interrogations carry it, but I felt the same gap in the shooting parts every single playthrough I did.

    Lopes69

    Kuphal99

Tired arguments, maybe, but I replayed the interrogations last winter and they still hooked me for a whole evening.

    Iron_Mitchell

The win rate at 63% over 452 duels isn't luck, it means the interrogation system genuinely convinces people match after match, which is exactly the point people miss when they call it tired.

  11. lenoir_bernadette

    sporer_elva

Same faces, same memory for me, and honestly that's still enough to keep voting for it.

  13. SilviaAce

    LootPlayer95

Oh, another vote for replayability from the ranking that also holds StarCraft and Portal 2, sure, apples to oranges but I get it.

    ArcadeMaster
