no it's overrated, the early game filters people who never see the rest

    LuckyLegend2

Makes me wonder if these rankings even work well for older design philosophies against newer expectations

The lock on and camera in tight spaces still feel stiff compared to what came after it in the genre

And then the fog just swallowed the whole screen and I remember sitting there in silence, not moving the stick, just listening to my own breathing while my roommate laughed at me from the couch

    Vergie_62

Where does that leave it in the rankings then?

Next to God of War it feels almost punishing on purpose, no cinematic hand holding, no big story beats carrying you through. I get why some people love that but next to a game this polished narratively, it just feels colder and less generous.

Same here, God of War carried me through with its story while this one just threw me into the fog and let me figure it out alone.

    Coop_Ferrer

    Antonette_77

next to God of War it's colder, yeah, but that coldness is the whole point for a lot of us

I've been showing this to my kid on weekends and honestly I don't care where it lands in some ranking, watching them figure out the fog gates alone is worth more than any score.

    QuestLegend2

Same here, watching someone else discover the fog gates fresh hits different than doing it yourself

Feels more like a museum piece than a game that competes today

    PedroHunter

People keep comparing it to Bloodborne like they're the same thing, they're not

    ArcadeHunter

  7. PixelOwl1997

It sits mid table but honestly that feels about right given how often it's compared to heavier hitters

  8. NovaSniper3

I've only put in a few hours, and it already feels overpraised to me

  9. CoopKnight4

The remake did something rare, it made an old structure feel current again without pretending the roughness wasn't part of the point (still love that the world tendency system barely gets explained and you just figure it out through dread). That alone earns it a solid place here.

I went in expecting just a graphics upgrade and got so much more!! The atmosphere hit me instantly, every corner felt dangerous in the best way. My only gripe is that some of the level design shows its age compared to later Souls games, but honestly that barely mattered once I got into the rhythm of it. Still climbed back for more even after dying constantly!!

    fwuckert

Oh sure, every corner felt dangerous, right up until the age of the level design started showing through the fog too

Compared to The Witcher 3 this feels almost minimalist, no quests piling up, no map markers, just you and a sword against something horrible in the fog. Bloodborne is faster and flashier but Demon's Souls has this heaviness to every step that I still think about. It earns its spot here even against bigger, longer games.

    meza_dario

  12. NovaLegend

It's beautiful and atmospheric, but the pacing in the early world drags more than I remembered

    GlitchOwl95

    SammieDragon

I get why people say that, but the drag is exactly what makes surviving it feel earned to me

    ArcadeOwl

Early world drags a bit, sure, but once the loop clicks it stops mattering fast

    Green18

Early game filters people, sure, but it rewards the ones who stay

    Puente51

    Audrey_55

I only put a couple hours in myself, but honestly this ranking stuff never captures what a game like this deserves

  14. RoguePhoenix

    SaveKid

I remember being the one on the couch just watching, and somehow that was enough, I didn't even touch the controller once

    TurboBard
