It rewards patience in a way few games from that generation did, especially with how the combat ties into positioning and timing rather than just stats. The story stays cryptic on purpose and I think that's part of why it still gets discussed.
The technical polish alone doesn't decide rankings, but it does explain why so many people still defend the game after all these years, and I think that counts for something.
