Ok but tbh the castle mechanic gets repetitive fast and the back half doesn't build on it much.

  2. QuestDragon1998

It trades FF8's spectacle for something smaller and tighter, and honestly the army battles add a layer FF8 never bothered with... still not sure which one I'd pick.

    Lenoir80

    RogueSamurai18

Smaller scope is exactly why I pick it over FF8 every single time, no contest for me.

  3. azemlak

Next to FF8 it just plays like a rougher draft of the same idea.

  4. DavidRider

  5. adelbert_jenkins

People sleep on this way too hard, the rune system alone should put it higher than 347th, it's criminally underrated!

  6. Edna_60

I borrowed a copy from my cousin one summer and never got past the early recruitment stretch, but I still think about that opening a lot.

  7. Lee_2002

Six party members, three combat systems, runes that actually matter, this thing does more with less than half the genre ever managed and still nobody ranks it right

  8. Jermain_49

Oh sure, let's compare it to Empire at War, because nothing says "identical experience" like a JRPG party game and a Star Wars RTS. Great matchup, really tells us so much...

    lenoir_bernadette

    ArcadeOwl

But does the pairing matter more than the actual votes it wins?

  9. PixelPilot1995

Everyone acts like it invented the genre (my friends included) but honestly the battles I remember were pretty simple stuff.

  10. NeonWarden66

I played this on a friend's setup after school and we were amazed at the time, but going back now the translation is rougher than memory gives it credit for.

    Alice_1995

  11. Ghost_Botsford

The story gets praised a lot but the middle stretch is just fetch quests with a fancy name.

  12. lloyd09

It's fine but the difficulty spikes make it feel unbalanced compared to what people claim.

    Cosmo_Lopez

Le "déséquilibré" me fait doucement rire (surtout venant d'un fil qui compare ça à Empire at War), les pics existent mais ils punissent l'imprudence, pas le hasard.

  13. Madyson_88

The army battles are a neat idea but they thin out fast and stop mattering by the end.

    Donato_1990

The army battles work fine as a change of pace mechanically, they just don't scale with the rest of the systems as the game goes on.

  14. Geraldine_2001

Compared to FF8 it just feels smaller in scope, which isn't a compliment when both get judged the same way.

    LaurySniper

I never thought scope was the point when I first played it, I just remember getting attached to characters way faster than I expected to.

  15. Iron_Shields

Why does this keep getting paired against Adventure Island II of all things? Do the algorithms even look at genre or is it just random pairing at this point?

    davis_lelah

Adventure Island II shows up in my queue against this constantly, and every time I just shrug because they're not even remotely similar games.

    lebsack_brown

Random pairing or not, the rune system is the one thing that actually holds up mechanically, the spell limits force real decisions instead of just mashing the strongest attack.
