    PixelPilot2

Undertale ages fine for me, this one had me fighting the camera more than the fog

    Crit_Becker

Fair point on that camera stuff, though I'd still take it over the newer walking sim horror clones any day.

I keep going back and forth on this one honestly, because the puzzles are genuinely clever in a way that a lot of modern horror games just don't bother with anymore, they'd rather give you a quest marker, but then the combat is so stiff that half my playthroughs just turn into me running past everything and hoping for the best, which kind of undercuts the tension the game worked so hard to build.

    SilentWarden

The puzzles work precisely because the combat is weak, running past danger is the tension

I played this during a really slow week at a friend's place, we just took turns because neither of us wanted to be alone with it for too long, it wasn't even that late but the house felt different afterward.

The puzzle logic feels obscure by today's standards, I won't pretend otherwise, but the tension it builds without relying on jump scares is something a lot of modern horror forgets how to do.

    LootAce

Everyone acts like nostalgia excuses the tank controls, I put maybe 6 hours into it back then and never touched it again.

    Jameson_1984

Same six hours here, and folks act like that's not enough to judge it fairly

It's sitting at 130th with a strong win rate, which suggests the fanbase voting for it is small but consistent rather than huge and casual, that's usually a sign of a cult favorite more than a mainstream pick.

Compared to Stranded Deep this game actually remembers to scare you instead of just starving you.

    Carpentier2010

And apparently a delivery driver dodging monsters with a pipe is peak psychological horror, who knew. The atmosphere absolutely holds up though, I'll give it that much credit.

    JazlynMaster

Showed it to my teenager expecting eye rolls, got genuine tension instead.

    RetroSamurai

    CosmoSniper2001

I did the exact same thing, pipe in hand, zero training, felt like a menace for about four seconds.

  14. AllieRider

The controller vibration for the heartbeat is still one of the smartest uses of feedback I've seen, way ahead of what The Last of Us tried later with its audio cues, honestly the tension managment here is on a different level even if the combat feels clunky as hell now.

    GhostSamurai

Ah yes, the same heartbeat vibration that definitely wasn't just there to mask the loading, truly revolutionary stuff.

Still remember the fog rolling in and just freezing on my couch, best night ever!!

    CoopRider

Same here, no combat training, just a pipe and pure panic, you all had that moment too right?

    NovaOwl

Would you say it holds up better than newer horror games, or is it more of a comfort pick at this point for you?

you paused together to psych yourselves up, did that actually work or just delay the inevitable

    Tanner_28

clones, funny how everyone calls newer horror derivative but nobody wants to redo the tank controls either

    CosmoFox2

I had a friend over for that first playthrough too, we kept pausing just to psych ourselves back up before going further.
