The rock soundtrack and grittier tone were a bold choice at the time, but I think it aged into something a bit try-hard rather than timeless.
ratke_candido
I went back expecting the same magic from the first game, or rather, I expected it to feel like a natural continuation, and instead the whole vibe felt like a different studio trying too hard to be edgy.
NovaMaster2
Different studio trying too hard, funny, I played it right after Sands of Time and it felt like the same guy who just discovered weights.
AllieRider
The double blade combos actually read fine once you commit to a rhythm, took me a weekend to get there.

feil_oma
I might be wrong, but I think the double blades alone justify its spot here.
SammieDragon
I'm biased, I'll admit it upfront, I've replayed this more than Uncharted 2 or Tomb Raider combined, and every time it clicks in a way those two never quite managed for me, even if I know the combat here is rougher around the edges.
Neon_Thiel
But going back to it now, the whole grim makeover feels less like growth and more like a phase, the kind you cringe at years later. The first game aged like something timeless, this one aged like a mood ring.

Same here, minus the tone complaints, I just remember mashing buttons in my room for hours and not caring one bit about canon.
ArcadeLegend3
The combat rework is fun but it changed the tone so much it barely feels like the same series.
Toy58
I've only put a few hours in, but the tone shift barely bothered me, honestly it felt refreshing.
heller_brain
Same, honestly, sessions never longer than an hour and I still didn't finish it, no regrets though.
Jermain_49
Oh sure, it's only 475th, must mean it's a bad game. Great logic.
CoopAce
Played it fresh last month on original hardware, controls held up better than I remembered honestly.
ArcadeAce4
Rank isn't the whole story here.
rowe_trystan
Great logic yourself, since 475th or 596th, whichever, both still say the same thing about where it lands.
IronKnight2004
Every duel it gets against Uncharted 2 feels like watching two totally different eras clash.
Leo_91
Iron_Mitchell
The chaos is real early on, or rather it's chaos until you learn the parries, then it clicks. Did it ever click for you?
TurboPilot55
Chaotic combat compared to the first game's elegance, that's fair, but next to Uncharted 2 it still feels deeper mechanically
Eldora_2003
The combat system alone deserves more credit than it usually gets here, don't you think that gets overlooked too often?
Hortense_48
Rowena_2009
I went back to it last year expecting nostalgia to carry me through, and it just... didn't.
Jaime_95
Waters52
My kid picked this over Mario Odyssey last month, mostly for the darker vibe honestly.
ArcadeWarden2

Darker vibe, sure, but that's exactly what feels off watching a kid play it, it wasn't built with that in mind.
NeonRider
RogueDragon
The DUAL wielding alone changed how combat reads compared to plenty of newer genre entries.
Miles_44
I think the combat depth argument holds up, though I'm not sure it's enough on its own to justify a much higher rank.
