Load times aside, the AI actually flanks properly, unlike most of its rivals here.
CapucineHunter

Compared to the usual turn based RPGs of its era, this one asks you to actually think about positioning and terrain, not just pick attack from a menu.
Aaron_85
Alfonso_1993
alfonso still remembers borrowing a friend's copy for like two weeks straight, and I mean I barely slept, kept telling myself one more battle and then it was already morning, my sister thought I'd lost my mind honestly, I never even got that far into the story but the fights alone were worth the exhaustion
Farrell16
same energy here, I lost entire weekends to it and never once regretted the lack of sleep
Eloisa_40
Loved the story, the difficulty spikes were just mean sometimes.
RetroDragon
the difficulty spikes were rough, no argument there (my party got wiped so many times I lost count), but did the story ever really lose you or just slow down for a bit
Brice_86
honestly it does more with terrain and elevation than most tactics games even now, chrono trigger is great but it never asked you to think like this
BossNinja1986
Does anyone else think it holds up better than most tactics games from that era?
QuestOwl2008
holds up how exactly? tactically maybe, but the pacing sure hasn't aged the same way for me
NovaMaster2
It's rated way too low for what it actually offers, and honestly the ranking algorithm seems to reward name recognition over actual quality here. People vote for what they remember, not what they played.
ArcadePhoenix
ursula23
So I keep seeing this pop up against Chrono Trigger and I don't get it, the pacing is nowhere near as tight, some of those story missions just drag on forever honestly.
ArcadeNinja
Fair point on the pacing, though I'd say the mid game missions build up the job system enough that it pays off later.
Alaina_61
It beats a certain yellow mouse game in tone, that's for sure, unless your mouse has a grudge against the church.
JazlynMaster
my kid asked why the mouse has a grudge against a church, so maybe the joke lands too well
GerhardByte
mouse tone joke aside, i grew up on both and tactics just has way more weight behind every fight
SaveHunter
It nails the tactical depth but the story pacing loses people somewhere in the middle chapters.
CoopAce
Battle system rewards patience over reflexes, which some people mistake for slowness, but the job customization depth is genuinely rare for its time.
GlitchPilot
Jermain_49
Oh sure, let's compare a tactical war epic to a game about catching electric rodents. Truly a fair fight in this ranking system.
WarrenByte
I actually kept a notebook of job combos too back when I played through it, which probably explains why the yellow mouse comparison bugs me so much, it's a completely different kind of demanding.
GlitchByte51
The tone joke is funny but it's a bit unfair to the ranking system itself, the real issue is what it gets paired against so often.
Nova_Corwin
Fair, though positioning only matters if the AI actually punishes bad placement, which it mostly does
Hortense_48
jana_fritsch
This exactly, the job system alone deserves way more credit
casas_ander
TurboSniper
Replying to ArcadePhoenix2
Fair point, honestly. Feels like the matchmaking just keeps pairing it with whatever's popular that week.
ArcadePhoenix2
AllenPhoenix
fair, elevation changes everything here
mazie25
Underrated is right, the job system alone should carry it way higher!!
