The interface stays deliberately simple for most of the runtime, which makes the moments it breaks that simplicity land much harder than they would in a flashier engine.

My roommate at the time refused to be in the room once she saw my face during act two.
rowe_trystan
My roommate thing happened to me too, except it was my brother refusing to even look at the screen after that.
LootAce
CosmoHunter49
Got me through a rough winter a couple years back, still weirdly grateful for that.
lfarrell
The SECOND act still gets me.
NovaMaster2
But nobody wants to admit the back half leans entirely on shock, and once you know what's coming the writing underneath is pretty thin, the tone shift is clever exactly once.
Save_Crona
Same happened to my gf, she left the room during act two and never came back tbh.
ComboSamurai
Does anyone actually think it holds up against Steins;Gate on plot, or is the shock value doing all the heavy lifting here?
NovaOwl
I still don't get why this keeps getting matched against Ace Attorney of all things, they're not even trying to do the same thing, and then someone throws Danganronpa in there too like it's the same genre, when really the closest comparison people should make is just other horror VNs, which barely exist on this site apparently.
GhostByte3
j'y ai mis trois heures d'affilée puis plus jamais touché, comparé à ça franchement c'est vite vu.
Eloisa_40
Barely, since the horror tag alone doesn't make it kin to Ace Attorney or Danganronpa, does it?
RustyRider
The genre needed a jump scare more than it needed another visual novel with actual writing, apparently! I say this with love because I still think about it constantly.
IronPilot
Same genre debate, different day, and I'm still not tired of having it.

Miles_44
Maybe it's unfair, but Ace Attorney just has more staying power for me.
McClure30
Same here honestly, Ace Attorney just has that replay pull this one doesn't quite manage.

RogueNinja97
It starts like the cutest thing imaginable, then it doesn't stay that way at all. The tonal whiplash is the whole point.
SammieDragon
Same, still get chills...
Arnaude_40
Gonzalez2008
Replying to SilentRunner
Isabel_19
What did you feel the second time through, once the surprise was gone?
NovaPlayer15
Replying to Isabel_19
Same, it lingers less once you know what's coming.
RetroSamurai
TurboPlayer2007
It works exactly once, and once isn't enough to justify beating Ace Attorney in duel after duel.
FrameLegend2010
daniel_launay
On me l'a présenté comme mignon et inoffensif. Menteur, celui qui m'a dit ça, complètement menteur.
CoopKnight4
The friendly warning always comes too late for this one, Ace Attorney at least tells you what kind of ride you're getting into.
