Terrain, exactly, that whole night we kept fighting over one hedge like it was WORTH it.

    Faivre4

    CosmoRex

You skipped classes for this one too? What was your go to strategy back then, turtle up or push early?

My daughter turtles every single time, drives me up the wall, but at least she's learning something from it.

    xkshlerin

Booted it up on a rainy afternoon years back and never really stopped since.

    bayer_jennings

It earns its spot, plain and simple, though half this thread arguing about rankings proves nothing except that people still care enough to fight over it

    CritWolf12

Accessible how exactly? I remember bouncing off the tutorial twice before anything clicked for me.

    vbrekke

Honestly the hard entry is what killed it for our old group, half the guys just stopped showing up to play.

Our group had the same wall, honestly, my brother quit after week one and never touched it again since.

    CosmoFox2

Same experience here, took me a solid week of losing before the terrain stuff actually made sense.

    NovaRex88

Best cover system out there, hands down (my couch still remembers the yelling), the ally AI just ruins it for me.

Terrain over decoration is exactly why it still beats most modern strategy games at their own game.

  6. LootAce

    leilani_harber

Compared to most turn based strategy from that era, this one demands you react in real time, no pausing to think forever.

  7. CritByte2

Remember when everyone said this would be a niche RTS? Or was it niche, whatever, still played it for years.

  8. Leta_1988

Booted it up again last month, the cover system still teaches Civ VI a thing or two about terrain use.

    CoopRunner

Cover system beating Civ VI on terrain sounds right to me, though I'd stop short of calling it a masterclass overall, still worth the replay.

    Carpentier2010

  9. fwuckert

Oh sure, it's a masterpiece, that's why half the forum still argues if it even belongs in this bracket.

    Rae_1990

Half the forum arguing if it belongs, funny since I never see that fight under XCOM, why is that?

  10. IronHunter82

Way more tense than XCOM turn based tension. Different beast though, closer to real time chess with terrain.

  11. frida_sawayn

My kid asks for one more mission every single night, so bedtime keeps sliding later than it should.

  12. SaveRex1999

not gonna lie this one feels overrated to me. the campaign missions get repetitive fast and the ai does some really dumb stuff once you know its patterns. people praise the cover system like its revolutionary but half the time units just stand there taking fire in the open anyway.

  13. LootNinja25

Played this at a friend's place back when it came out, and we're still arguing about its ranking a decade later.

  14. LaurySniper

Back in my dorm days a buddy and I would take turns commanding while the other just watched and yelled suggestions, terrible strategy but somehow we cleared entire campaigns that way, we called it co-command even though the game never had a real coop mode for it, good memories regardless of how badly we played.

    ComboWarden

  15. GerhardByte

closer to XCOM in tension than Civ VI ever gets, different genre but same tight nerves

    Alice_1995

    LaceyOwl

Same feeling here, I kept coming back to it years after XCOM had already faded from my rotation.
