I don't really have the energy anymore to argue about where this should sit, it's been the same debate for years and nobody moves an inch, I just vote how I feel and move on honestly, the game is fine, it's charming, but ranking it near turn based classics with actual stakes in their story always feels like comparing different things entirely and I'm tired of pretending otherwise
CritRunner70
Bruce_55
Same debate every time and I still vote with a smile, honestly, my nephew just started his own save file last month and I felt twelve again!!
Desiree_87
418th feels generous honestly, the battling system got so much better in later gens and this one just hasn't aged well
CoopRider
Ranking wise the ELO here is honestly about right, it sits in that weird middle tier where nobody agrees on what it's being compared to
LuckyByte9
harber_cordia
I get the aging argument, though I still remember trading with a friend just to finish my dex, and that part never felt outdated to me.
Gaudin1990
ArcadeLegend3
I think it dates well actually, the core battling still holds up fine when I go back to it.

I've been playing this with my daughter on weekends and she's just as hooked as I was, way more than she ever got into Chrono Trigger when I tried that one with her first
QuestLegend2
Sweet that it clicked for her, though Chrono Trigger's pacing just isn't built for that kind of casual weekend replay

The loop really is the whole game for me too, I just never expected to still feel it decades later.
NovaOwl
Okay so I keep coming back to this one, not because it's perfect, it's really not, the story is thin and the pacing drags in places, but there's something about the loop that I still find myself defending in these threads, probably more than I defend actual masterpieces honestly
GlitchSniper98
Jermain_49
oh great, another timeless classic apparently, lol

Wait, an actual summon animation over hours of EV training? I used to skip battles just to keep exploring routes.
BossMaster2010
Fair point about the depth, though I'd still take a summon animation over EV training any day of the week
bdickinson
Not gonna lie, I expected more nostalgia points from this ranking system, apparently my childhood means nothing to the algorithm
Matteo_2007
I remember the trade requirement for some evolutions being a real wall back then since not everyone had a second cartridge or a link cable handy so you just had pokemon stuck at the wrong stage for ages the menus were clean for the time and battles ran fast enough that grinding never felt like a chore even if the interface now looks pretty basic compared to what came after
GhostWolf1989
good for its era. against chrono trigger's writing it just doesn't have the same weight though
CoopPilot2007
What made it stick for you, was it the trading or just replaying the region over and over on your own?
Audrey_55
i put maybe 40 hours into this one and 60 into chrono trigger and honestly the pokemon loop kept me coming back more, wich says alot
PixelPilot62
Same loop, different decade. It earned that spot fair.
SilentDragon
LuckyLegend2
I played through the whole region with my cousin trading tips over the phone every night after school
